Did you see the Meta Labs tour from over two years ago? Internally they've been playing with headsets in the $10k-$20k range for years that are way better than anything Apple has demonstrated. They've just got a broader target audience so their commercial products don't have everything. https://youtu.be/x6AOwDttBsc?feature=shared

Do you not think Apple has equivalent or better prototypes in their lab?

Absolutely. Their MO since the 80's has been to wait until a competitor has something good, then hire those people away and repackage it with a shiny UX. Good artists copy, great artists steal, and all that. I live in Intel land where Apple moved in and hired a bunch of top silicon people for their M1 project etc. I was also at Intel when we showed Apple Ultrabook designs that they stole for MacBook Air. Part of the game. They've clearly been doing the same with Meta, who has been dumping endless billions into VR tech, and publishing all the bleeding edge work in the field. Apple doesn't have R&D, they have pirates and lawyers, and very famously spend the minimum amount possible on actual research.
