Does this require a group to already have at least 2 people (yourself and someone else non-token-gated) first?  I can't seem to make a fresh direct chat via this method.

while I've got your ear, is this collection check only for the primary ETH address for the account, or for any linked?  I know some of my collectors send to vaults, and maybe delegate could be another good safe option...
