what if you could get an fid for free and with no storage units you can have user data and some small number of links/casts/reactions

We had gas only FIDs and people spammed 100K+ accounts in a matter of days.

How do you stop someone from creating 10B accounts?

if accounts are free, they can't be onchain?

the tension is any gating on the network removes permissionless and thus any hope of achieving credible neutrality

i don't think there's an inherent problem with creating 100k accounts on an open network. with a federated model you don't have to worry about storing all their data, which is why i like that idea but i understand that it increases complexity

i would maybe look into adding some protocol level signal that someone cares about what an account has to say to make it a bit harder to spam. kind of like a social PoW - perhaps require vouching from a trusted user. i get that this potentially makes onboarding harder

i think it's a problem worth taking another look at (not saying it's easy)
