there are a few million of us & in terms of attention, many of the big names already came here, churned & do not intend on returning

that means their communities of several hundred thousands do not intend on returning either

now instead of discussing how we can incentivize better acquisition, which in turn will drive distro & liquidity, bringing new devs, more capital, new ideas & enrich us as a network

the 250 person leader board is largely still debating whether or not it’s a cultural issue?

i genuinely give fc about a month in on solana socialfi getting pushed, and no one will remember warpcast 

fc will continue to grow but mindshare is a very fickle mistress

actionable steps to improve fc right now (some open thoughts from last few days)

1. create a dev playground - attach git, index builders & verify projects. outline clear milestones & needs in open database. hire grant lead. align bounties & builders. seed quickly with 1-5k.

2. hire ecosystem lead - give 3m (2% of last 150m round) to slowly deploy into eco leaders (LP, seed, subs, promotion, etc.). who’s brining in users? capitalize projects that move value & improve retention/LTV.

3. align incentives - pay your content creators. users with 1k+ followers on x need to be compensated at least as much as x is paying them to shill fc… becomes 2x post for 2x comp = win-win.

it’s low imo. we have everything they desire right here. they just talk too much (ik i do too), but it’s all smoke & mirrors. they just pasta their friends. make one of them rich & they’ll bring every follower, friend & family member they have. match x posting rewards. amplify their accounts to make them feel special—whatever. the cultural element, the lower engagement/rebuild follower element—it all goes out the window once one of them makes money. it’s not that all of them have to make money; only the top few do so they can post about it & sound smart. then the meta swings & they fold like bugs to a light. once they’re here, frames may retain, but holding the meta is how the swarms migrate 

no matter how you slice it, we play zero-sum games & money is the only thing that moves attention

naturally buy shouldn't be from lack of trying & now is a good time given regulatory clarity, base run, clanker attention & frames momentum. we can't take good timing for granted. it wont last forever. we also cant let fc eco fade relative to the most bullish base backdrop we'll likely ever see. bad for devs choosing to build here. slowly throttled is fine but what else can the platform do if these cannot improve retention? fc is materialized. now we must hold meta. plus retention must be taken in the eye of the crypto native. in such case, there are more ways to "buy" users than ua as we're discussing here. namely through the nurturing of an ecosystem, expanding access to capital/optics for devs, and/or matching x creator rewards. at this point, especially if the goal is to attract all of crypto first & foremost, it should be considered that retention is inherently rooted in ecosystem appreciation

While I appreciate you sharing suggestions, when talking to devs, funding is the not primary issue. 

It’s growing retained users.

We have yet to have an ecosystem app drive growth. Ecosystem assets have driven growth, but they don’t need grants.

1. Very few successful apps, esp. in consumer, are incubations.

2. Not really something you do with a pre-cash flow positive venture backed company. 

Agree that if the ecosystem grows the network will grow. But our contributions will be in product / software and then figuring out ways to get more retained users on Warpcast available to everyone else on Farcaster.

appreciate you too. my suggestion was more holistic. yes, grants are probably least impactful of suggestions. also probably most cost effective too: why not incubate, especially if belief is an app will drive growth at some point? 

and if assets are driving growth now, why not invest in some capacity? 

do you not agree that if the ecosystem appreciates around emerging communities retained users will grow?

It’s a primary concern. The consistent top priority for Farcaster developers is grow retained daily active users.

Retaining devs in the ecosystem should also be a priority.

Since a couple of month we've see a lot of Farcaster OG devs abandon their project (no funding and not enough revenu) and move away from building for Farcaster. 

This should be a concern, unless you plan on massively hiring for Merkle to build a solid ecosystem of apps around Farcaster and Warpcast.

You can't expect retention if there is nothing interesting built around Farcaster, and most of the funds to build this ecosystem are already in Merkle's hands.

No hate, Farcaster only wins if it’s interesting. Have to make it more interesting.

Build on the existing foundation which is good. Figure out what brings in more people and keeps them around. Repeat.

fwiw i think other socialfi will struggle more to keep users

but there will be pulses of interest elsewhere, promises of airdrops and KOLs shifting narratives

don't hate us if we go play elsewhere 🙏
