I don’t think free speech in 2005 was a partisan issue. It very much was in 2020 and then now in 2025.

It wasn’t partisan in that the centrist dems were also happy to stifle antiwar protests until the later 2000s It was very partisan in that republicans were putting people in cages at their public appearances to keep them out of view
