1. We're moving away from initial follows to a purely algorithmic feed. 2. We set up the initial follow system last summer because the single biggest reason for churn was people didn't follow enough people and didn't have enough content (and we didn't have a good algo feed yet). 3. I told people to cast in channels. A lot of people resisted / told me it was dumb. Other users took the time to do that. 4. We mapped onboarding interests (Ethereum, startups, memes, etc.) to channels and the users who were consistently posting in channels last summer / early fall. 5. The list had 200+ people on it, but 100 users got a power law of the initial follows. We actually randomized the number of follows between 60-70. 6. The list was proof of work -- at the time we set it up -- for the users that were here early and consistently posting. 7. There were some early users who -- for whatever reason -- did not cast a lot last summer and didn't do it in channels -- they missed out on initial follows as a result.

Damn it dan, last summer there must have been 60-100k users already? Out of those, 200 and 100 having a power law is not really something of a notable range, the entire 200 got power law. Moving forward anyway, glad that autofollow got dumped. I don't even care so much about it, my main argument against it was "it's like searching on google and it filters out items they don't want you to see, in autofollow's case a few have ownership of the feed." The trending tab though wth man what is up with that...

Last summer there were fewer than 10K users.

Ok, the rise up to 100k, 200, 300 must have caught you off guard then.

In retrospective it was inevitable, ofc it needs some tweaking but even if you buy a Ferrari it will need tweakings, mantainnance, tires changed depending on the weather and a very long list of etcs What I am most excited about is the possibility to grow an audience, I’ve been using social media for more than 10 years and warpcaster is the first place I feel my work is appreciated for real
