How are planning to make Farcaster sign ups free? 1. At the protocol, there will always be some amount of cost. Truly free would mean you can spin up an infinite number of spam accounts and fill up the network with junk, making Snapchain unusable. If you allow accounts to be deleted / removed at the protocol, you remove decentralization / introduce a backdoor for censorship. 2. Today the protocol fee is $2 per sign up. We're reducing that $0.20 in the next few weeks. And then there's a path reducing it to $0.10 or $0.05. 3. Warpcast is experimenting with offering a free sign up if you connect a qualifying X / Twitter account. We hope we can offer other methods like phone number verification, proof of human credentials, etc. in the future. Important: we're still paying the protocol fee under the hood. So we're effectively "underwriting" new users. Any app can take this approach. Continued in next cast...

4. We're exploring a concept called "storage delegation". This will allow apps like Warpcast or Coinbase Wallet to register a bunch of storage in bulk and then dynamically allocate a small amount to each new sign up (delegate). If a user ends up churning—or ends up being spammy—the app has the ability to undelegate its storage. The user would then have the option to pay the fee if they wanted to keep using Farcaster. Important: you can still create an account directly with the protocol by paying a fee. For users, the change would feel seamless, but for developers it would allow them to easily experiment with bringing their userbase to Farcaster without having to pay an upfront cost for every user. We're still thinking through the design, but ultimately, if done correctly, should significantly increase the number of apps bringing users to the protocol—while still preserving user sovereignty (assuming they want to pay). In the long run I think signup fees signify intent so it is actually a good thing. I’ve come to understand this better now, and it’s not really a traditional web2 app.

>If you allow accounts to be deleted / removed at the protocol, you remove decentralization / introduce a backdoor for censorship. Wait - isn't it possible to get rid of a FID? Or was that "just" a transfer to basically any other wallet address. I still have the issue from the "weird" sign up and have to send the FID of the wallet holding my ens somewhere else. Do you happen to know if anyone has made a tool for it? If not I'll do it asap, been pushing it aside since I joined lol.

This is a great step, though the post signup experience is equally important. I helped onboard a friend @dailystoic and suggested they do a raindrop to get exposure, we’re guessing that having responded to 90+ comments left them labelled as “Spammer (High Risk)”, reducing their exposure further!

I think it would be interesting to have the flagged spam accounts have to pay to get their account reverified, maybe jumping them up in the queue or adding some points to their account for the month 🤷
