Three Mile Island had virtually no direct impact on people living around the plant. Zero people died from radiation exposure in Fukushima (the one emergency worker who was compensated for getting cancer wasn't confirmed to have gotten it because of radiation exposure, but the way Japanese law works, it doesn't matter). 

Chernobyl was largely about human error and the failures of the Soviet system that disincentivized honest safety reporting by workers. 

Gen IV reactors are defined mostly by their use of a coolant other than water. Gen III reactors, including the AP1000s that Westinghouse built in Georgia and China, have the passive safety features that prevent a meltdown from happening if there's a loss of power like what happened in Fukushima.

The sheer volumes of carbon-free electricity nuclear reactors generate is simply unbeatable, other than maybe via giant hydroelectric dams. 

Of course, everything has externalities. Solar panels are made with coal, take up huge areas of land, don't last very long.
