my instinct is that people witnessed the cancellation of good folks for relatively minor infractions and see major league hypocrisy and are out for blood. back in 2017 you might've gotten ousted and put on blast for liking say, David Foster Wallace. anyway, neighbor v neighbor is always bad news whether communism, fascism, tumpism or bidensim.

cancellation is dumb, period people should be able to express their opinions, however dumb within the bounds of the 1st amendment (which is quite permissive)

Counterpoint: people have been ostracizing each other on every side of the political spectrum since the dawn of the first amendment because that's also protected speech! Obviously some cancellations are poorly justified, but how can you have a world without them?

Exactly. And we have the right to call their opinion (and by default, them) dumb.
