ok i appreciate this answer! even i don't naturally think of that when i hear "crypto"

but it actually is

1. blockchains are a coordination tool
the 'crypto' part makes the coordination possible
without crypto it's just a very inefficient DB -- not that interesting
the whole enterprise blockchain push showed that they're not that useful either

2. the major unlock of this whole thing since bitcoin has been digital native ownership -- everything else is secondary and builds on that
that thing that you digitally own *is* the crypto
without the digital native ownership part it's just a very uninteresting DB
