In 1821, an eccentric Frenchman named Charles-François Dumouriez proposed an idea for a "universal language" to promote global peace. It never caught on, but it was a fascinating early attempt at linguistic unity. In 1904, a massive fire broke out in Baltimore, Maryland, burning over 1,500 buildings. It led to the nationwide adoption of standardized fire-fighting equipment and protocols. During World War II, a British officer named Jasper Maskelyne used his skills as a magician to create illusions that misled enemy forces, earning him the nickname "The War Magician." In 1815, the eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia led to the "Year Without a Summer" in 1816. This volcanic winter caused widespread crop failures and food shortages across the Northern Hemisphere.
