I really think taking a positive strategy like Carnegie did with libraries  and investing public spaces of value would be a better approach than this…but alas I am not a billionaire.

Carnegie I believe is legit. However, Marcus Daly built gardens in anaconda, MT to prove that the soot from the smelter wasn’t hazardous. They found plants and made a pretty awesome public space, but you definitely don’t want to drink the water in Anaconda or Butte.  It was all a smoke screen to make more money.

Did the old titans of industry do it for the good or for tax evasion/ laundering/ the usual financial incest? Would love to think of them as class acts that held society's interest above unlimited wealth. But my heart says "nah. Same game. Different rules with accidental benefits."
