βrocket man badβ is the prevailing narrative, but long before most of you had an opinion, Elon was leading the tiny, scrappy team that put the first private spacecraft into orbit (Falcon 1) using his own money. the story is incredible, and Elon deserves credit for the unprecedented achievement. https://www.amazon.com/Liftoff-Desperate-Early-Launched-SpaceX/dp/0062979973

I give credit for that achievement, funded by government money fwiw. The same person who is still on the teat, now is a cosplay libertarian.

According to a Los Angeles Times investigation, Musk's companies had received an estimated $4.9 billion in government support by 2015, and they've gotten more since. Here's a look at some of the federal and state-level government subsidies that have contributed to building Musk's empire.Dec 15, 2021

SpaceX was founded in 2002. 13 years later, they were the cheapest launch provider in the world and it's only fair (and good business) that they received a good chunk of the pie by this point. i'm just trying to set the record straight about the early years that were almost entirely funded by Elon himself. now do Lockheed Martin and Boeing (ULA) for comparison, if you want.

Still not downing him for that, landing a rocket was revolutionary. I have legitimate criticisms. Starship is a fever dream and not ready for any manned missions in any foreseeable future. The launch cost now is much closer to market fwiw, probably bc of the new competition. I used to be a fan until I saw that he likes to sell vaporware such as self driving.

i agree with all of these criticisms π― even still, Starship will be a huge boon for space regardless of how long it takes to get it human-rated (i imagine it might be a different vehicle altogether by then)

Iβd agree, two things can be true at the same time. Heβs assembled an amazing group of engineers and scientists and doing great things. Personally imo his ego is a double edged sword. Makes him promise things that arenβt realistic in the timeframe. Going fast and breaking things isnβt the way. As my final beef because I could go on all dayβ¦ Tesla robot. Please just stop Elon. Boston Dynamics does it ten times better
