“rocket man bad” is the prevailing narrative, but long before most of you had an opinion, Elon was leading the tiny, scrappy team that put the first private spacecraft into orbit (Falcon 1) using his own money. the story is incredible, and Elon deserves credit for the unprecedented achievement. https://www.amazon.com/Liftoff-Desperate-Early-Launched-SpaceX/dp/0062979973

That's fair, he has been relatively involved with SpaceX design decisions over the years, and I do think leftists can be dismissive of that. I think he'd be great in a position like Chief Engineer perhaps where he could focus on that rather than trying to be Culture War King. I was oversimplifying for dramatic effect, the truth is somewhere in the middle. I still think Musk is overrated and the rest of the team is underappreciated though.

yep, i hate that he became such a reckless public figure over the years to your point, nowadays, SpaceX has a lot more autonomy, and their team deserves immense credit for pushing the tech so far, but Elon does still have a lot of authority over critical design decisions (like catching the booster mid-air) nuance, innit?
