My dad who has worked for the same company as a lead engineer for the last 30+ years lost his job today, exactly 1 year before he could retire.

Shit like this just reaffirms in my mind that people shouldn’t give the best years of their lives to some soulless company that doesn’t care. 

I certainly won’t do it.

if you’re skilled & relatively young, i can’t encourage you enough to find a way to own your own work. this could be through founding a business or side hustle, joining a startup early to get equity, etc. don’t let the allure of steady short-term pay turn you into a lifelong wage slave (not dunking on anyone)

Absolutely. More freedom and less dependence. 

I’m kind of walking the line on it with 2 remote tech jobs, but I’ve used the same skills for self employment in the past.
