update: with @rish's help, we think we've discovered the root cause.

TL;DR: there's an easy fix and it will be implemented before tips go out tomorrow.

for the nerds, technical details below:

/microsub (proudly) uses @neynar hubs and APIs to send out all tip casts.

our system assumed (wrongly) that if a request to the @neynar API "failed" (i.e. returned a non-200 HTTP code) that the cast did not go through. this is not always correct; in today's case, the casts did indeed send, but the requests to Neynar returned a 500 code, so our system, as designed, automatically retried the "failed" requests and double-sent a bunch of tips.

Neynar already has a feature (idempotency keys) to prevent this from happening, which we were unaware of. our mistake.
