🧵 (1/2) [ Spoiler Alert ] Regarding yesterday's cast, Sydney Carton does not suffer from Multiple Personality Disorder (now known as Dissociative Identity Disorder, or DID) in A Tale of Two Cities. Instead, he is a self-destructive lawyer grappling with deep-seated feelings of inadequacy, self-loathing, and a sense of wasted potential. Carton turns to alcohol to numb his sense of purposelessness and failure. However, his unrequited love for Lucie Manette does becomes the catalyst for a profound transformation in his character.

( 2/2 ) Although Lucie marries Charles Darnay — a French aristocrat who rejects the cruel and oppressive ways of his family, the Evrémondes — Carton remains devoted to Lucie and her family, expressing his love in quiet and selfless ways. In the story, Carton, who bears a striking resemblance to Lucie’s husband, assumes Darnay’s physical identity to save him from the guillotine. This act is not a manifestation of DID, but rather a conscious and deliberate sacrifice. Carton's actions are driven by his love for Lucie and his desire to find meaning in his life, even if it means sacrificing himself for others. /cryptosapiens 🧠
