The proliferation of the SM7B makes the audiophile in both happy and sad. It's a great podcasting mic for a wide range of voices, but a world where there is essentially one mic being used by all podcasts is a sad world.

I dislike the in-frame mics, so if you’re looking for a shotgun mic, the MKH416 is truly amazing.

If I was doing an in-frame look, I would probably go for a TLM 103 and use it inverted like a broadcaster.

If I wanted to status signal, I would buy a U87 and use it in a spider shock mount.

As an alternative to the Shure, maybe a RE20? Same price range, cooler look, and I think has better sound for deep voices, without requiring a cloud-lifter.

Not sure even I know the answer to the deeper question behind that question. I think it came from my dad doing a PhD in digital signal processing and growing up writing code to do audio analysis. :/

Was just genuinely curious! Always fascinated when people have deep knowledge in a relatively esoteric area (esp. if not their day-to-day).
