Like other L2 blockchains, Base runs on top of Ethereum, making any transactions on the network much faster and cheaper for the user compared to Ethereum at the base level. Base groups transactions into packets, compresses them, and then transmits them to the main network.

A similar approach is used by other ecosystem projects in Ethereum scaling, the most well-known and capitalized of which are Polygon, Arbitrum, zkSync or Optimism. The toolkit (stack) and code fragments of the latter were used in the development of Base. A few days after its launch, Base surpassed Optimism in terms of daily turnover of cryptoassets in the network, but this was mainly due to speculative interest.
