A lot of us grew up with adults around us reacting negatively to natural body stuff. Like, one of my friends once told me that when she was a kid, every time she pooped, her mom would go, Ew, flush it! Get rid of the smell! And that made her scared of pooping. Now that I'm older, I get that these reactions did more harm than good. They didn't help us understand our bodies! they just made us anxious. It’s like, just because something seemed gross to them didn’t mean it had to shape how we saw the world. We didn't need to hear ew or yuck about everything. We needed the space to figure things out ourselves, to name things our own way, and to learn that all this stuff is just a natural part of life. So if something ordinary like a bathtub floater happened, instead of freaking out or acting grossed out, it would've been better if someone just smiled and said, It's normal, no big deal. We’ll clean it up together. Honestly, we would've felt a lot calmer if they were calm too.
