to be clear, I'm actually in favor of this, if Merkle's decision is that they want their client to be enshrined as pretty much a prerequisite, like it is in telegram's case. as a dev, when you think you're building on a protocol, but it actually works more like a platform with an API, it's a pretty unpleasant surprise.
