I think nostr is interesting and has a shot of reaching scale for some things, but maybe less likely to be in consumer social. 

No username system is bad UX, and max decentralized/tech first/hard to use social have been attempted in past and haven’t gotten mass traction.

There is a username system. Look up NIP-05

thanks, wasn't aware! I read somewhere about adding people's nickname to the client when you add their public key to your contact book. 

Usernames seem to be namespaced to domains, which I don't think is as simple or as good an experience as domainless usernames

Not sure about I agree - why is namespace competition a huge advantage to the users? 

To me it just adds noise and visual complexity to every search/post/profile

Do you mean the user experience? That’s temporary. Long term name space being its own layer with multiple players competing with each other is a huge advantage.
