The automatic use of the addressbook or ENS where applicable protects you from scammers who will try to trick you by generating addresses with first/last 4 digits being same as yours.

its sort of an alternative to a telegram group chat or discord but with much better distribution to users active on Farcaster - most tg/discord chats are muted by users and rarely revisited, on Farcaster scrolling through the feed can serendipidously surface channel content.
