🪙 Bitcoin mining consumes 0.54% of the world's electricity According to a new report from the Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance, bitcoin mining consumes about 138 TW/h annually, which is 0.54% of global energy consumption. The US dominates the bitcoin mining sector, accounting for 75.4% of the hash rate. They are followed by Canada, South America, the Middle East and Northern Europe. The report also talks about possible risks for mining: as the reward per block decreases, the motivation of miners decreases, which can threaten the security of the network. Experts believe that transaction fees should play a major role in the future.
