Various PC components use a range of optimizations to improve performance metrics. Common examples include the processor pipeline and caches, which enhance CPU efficiency. However, SSDs provide a more complex case. They use more bits per memory cell (e.g., SLC vs. QLC) to increase capacity, which slows read/write speeds. To compensate, manufacturers use faster SLC cells as cache and gradually transfer data to slower QLC cells. While this boosts performance, it reduces the longevity of QLC cells. This trade-off means increasing complexity in optimizations. For example, QLC cells can be set to operate in SLC mode under certain conditions. This reliance on optimizations indicates a need for fundamentally new advancements, like quantum computing, for future growth. However, it also leads to more complex and less manageable infrastructure, declining reliability, and increasing challenges for engineers - reflecting the current state of technology.
