As a combat medic veteran, I don’t generally enjoy war movies—how could I? I’ve lived it. The smells, the sounds, the weight of it all—it’s not something you can just watch and feel "entertained." But Saving Private Ryan is different. It’s my favorite war movie, not because I like reliving the memories, but because it’s the only film I’ve seen that comes close to showing the raw, unfiltered chaos of combat.
The opening scene alone—Omaha Beach—hit like a flashback. The screams, the blood, the overwhelming sensory overload. It felt real. For a lot of vets, it was real, bringing back buried memories, some we’d rather leave in the past. That realism is why it stands out to me—it’s not about glorifying war, but about showing how it feels to be there. For those who don’t know what it’s like, it’s as close as they’ll get.
That said, I focus on Living, Loving, and Laughing now—life’s too short to dwell on the past.
