I've never encountered any of these people who are actual, conscientious believers. They're into their version of christianity because it justifies their biases (especially those which tell them that they can do whatever they want with no repercussions or accountability). These are the type of folks who harp on about sexual purity while sex-obsessing constantly, perving over everyone on Grindr and (statistically speaking) abusing kids in the worst ways imaginable. It's not about religion. It's about rationalizing their patriarchal intitlement to treat the entire world like their own personal fleshlight.

3 camps in my experience growing up in a famous Christian family. Fundamentalists Charismatics / Prosperity Gospel Non-denominational / Progressive / Liberal / Liberatory. A LOT of overlap between camps but itโ€™s a big spectrum. The Fundies and charismatics are exactly as youโ€™re describing and they easily make up the largest most powerful of the camps especially because they overlap a lot. The charismatics like to put on a kinder more open tactic while fundies are naturally very segregated. Non-denoms are also very large but theyโ€™re not really that activated and powerful especially politically because they take separation of church v state the most seriously. Itโ€™s all a clusterfuck and none of them really hold each other accountable in any meaningful way or even have discussions about their disagreements. Yet the fundies definitely benefit from the good PR non-denoms generate for them, all being consider under the general โ€˜Christianโ€™ umbrella term.
