Noob question, why do metamask ask users to explicitly switch chains they are currently connected with? Could that be part of the info in the tx confirmation popup?

MetaMask was built when there was only one EVM chain, Ethereum. There were no alt L1s or L2s. The team have been re-writing the wallet to be natively multi chain. This has been a huge endeavour and the results will soon be visible to users
