Spathion swords were the primary double-edged straight blades used by the Eastern Roman Empire, more commonly referred to as the Byzantine Empire after the 15th century. Their appearance echoed that of the ancient Roman Spatha, often featuring notable medieval-style crossguards that varied in size but typically had a larger pommel. Fighters generally used these swords in conjunction with a shield or while riding on horseback.
