there are two types of engineers: those who try to de-risk their build as much as possible and those who make a bet and build something small to test it funnily, the former seem to be better technically. the latter are the ones that make cool shit.

similar patterns exist everywhere - business, sport, music, art, writing - and it’s not a new idea, the ones who take ‘calculated’ risks tend to learn so much faster

In my mind the derisking period in building correlates to practice in sports. The game will have evolved during your training time so your additional time means you’ll need to show up better or perhaps differently but now you have a foundation from which to operate, which can let you better create in the moment
