Has any sci-fi book series gotten better with each new addition rather than worse?

I'll probably get in a fight for this, but Expanse.
Early books are basically simple detective dramas, then scale increases to solar system wide corporate espionage, then the gate opens and we go galactic. Things keep exploding and we end up with some really deep meaning of the universe stuff.

From my experience, a lot of people got into the Expanse series for the gritty detective aspect, and are upset that it got tainted by the billion year epic alien wars, but I love it, and it's kinda in the name 😅  Space gets big the farther out you go.

No way this meets the prompt criteria excellently - will check out 🫡
