there is something subtly F’ed up about X/Twitter because there are no channels, and because hashtags are pointless, it sort of encourages a “mono-focus” account model you’re encouraged just to tweet about one area, get added lists on that area, and not talk about other stuff broken approach to social media

so true. Channels are such an unlock. The mono focus algorithm mysteriously decides what you get to see. Your voice is only heard if you're an influencer or if you figure out how to game the system. If not you're just a spectator. Channels organize things in a sensible way and connect conversations.

Most of these mainstream platforms have lost the 'social' in social media. I was mentioning this to someone a few weeks back that we needed to bring back chat room apps specifically for this reason, but this seems to be really hitting the nail so far.

yep, you get sorted into categories of your focus area making it difficult to break out. FC fixes this.

Consequently it also incentivizes identities that are confirmation biased into something they were not to start with. So many accounts that were great follows around 2K followers, but became cringe past 10K.
