Post Malone always had range, but I'm shook, y'all.
Country music is like sushi. Simple ingredients, but an *incredibly* high skill ceiling. That's why lower tier songs in the genre sound so similar and why the greats are so universally recognized as the masters they are.
To me, the true soul of country music is a state of yearning, but neverā¦ quite... being the person you wish you were and Post just fuckin nails it.
Itās so clear he loves the genre, understands all the tropes, and has a great intuition about when to subvert them.
More importantly, he understands when to just *enjoy* the rules of the game.
On its own, that expression of taste + musical experience is impressive, but when you consider that the album is basically a survey of all the era's of modern-ish popular country music (Outlaw, Honky Tonk, Western, Bro-Country, Country Pop, Bluegrass, etc) it's clear that he studied the shit out of his country music history... 32 replies
