In the 1950s, Toshiba adopted its iconic name, incorporating it into the company emblem. The name blends two Japanese words represented by two kanji characters. "Tou" means "east," while "Shiba" denotes "cambric," a delicate fabric made from finely twisted yarn. Toshiba's name reflects its origin from a merger a decade earlier, with "To" coming from Tokyo Electric and "Shiba" from Shibaura Manufacturing.
