A photo from the early 1990s shows Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a senator during the Babangida regime. Tinubu’s political career began in 1991 with the Social Democratic Party. Elected to the Senate in 1992, he represented Lagos West in the short-lived Nigerian Third Republic. After the annulment of the 1993 presidential election, Tinubu co-founded the National Democratic Coalition to push for democracy and recognition of Moshood Abiola as the election winner. In 1994, he went into exile, returning in 1998 after Sani Abacha’s death led to a transition to democracy. Backed by the Alliance for Democracy, he won the 1999 Lagos State governorship election, beginning his legacy in Nigerian politics. #Historylovers
