Because so many authors are self publishing, it’s a completely different environment than when I started writing. I think it’s harder for people to tradition a publish now, but that said, there are millions of people self publishing and finding an audience.

I have a really strict routine. I don’t know if you know the writer, Haruki Murakami, but he wrote a book called novelist as vocation, and I think he outlines his routine in that. My routine is pretty similar. I write every day, in the morning for about five or six hours.I do a lot of revising in those hours too. If I don’t keep a strict schedule like that, I won’t get a book finished.

I am someone who absolutely loves wild, fantastical, imaginative books. And it’s perhaps a contradiction, but I also love realism. So combining realism with the Fantastic is some thing that you’ll find in most of my books. I do a lot of historical research, and traveling to places. I’ve had books set in France, Japan, Prague, New York, and all over the world.

I think living in Japan had a huge influence on my writing! Not only in terms of the topic of my new book the puzzle box, but in the lifestyle that I learned while I was there. I worked in a Japanese high school, and the discipline and regularity that I learned there, has stayed with me ever since. I am an extremely disciplined writer. I write every day from eight until about 12:30 or one. Keeping that regularity and that discipline has allowed me to keep writing and publishing books. I wouldn’t have learned it without living in Japan!!
