DMM Bitcoin Closes: $308 Million Stolen, Clients Rescued by SBI VC

The Japanese cryptoservice DMM Bitcoin stops working after a major hack in which 4,502.9 bitcoins were stolen (at the time of the incident — $ 308 million). Customer funds will be transferred to the SBI VC Trade platform (a subsidiary of SBI Group). The closure is expected in March 2025. The investigation links the attack to the North Korean hack group Lazarus.

The incident became one of the largest thefts of 2024. Total losses from crypto attacks in the first half of the year amounted to $1.6 billion, which is twice as high as in 2023.
