Pattern 78: House for One Person

"Conceive a house for one person as a place of the utmost simplicity: essentially a one-room cottage or studio, with large and small alcoves around it. When it is most intense, the entire house may be no more than 300 to 400 square feet."

This is something I've wanted for decades: a small, simple cottage of my own with a small yard -- ideally as part of a cottage cluster in a quiet area where I don't need to own a car to get around. 

But I live in the US, where the norm is still giant "single-family" houses and vehicle-centric design.

There are some forward-thinking initiatives for "missing middle" housing  in some parts of the US (e.g., the Portland Residential Infill Project) but it's still not easy to find a place to live this way.
