Well, a lot of them were work horses, and their owners decided that the best way for them to provide value was by becoming pet food. There was a bit of a horse holocaust :/

I don't think the systems we have are ready either. 

I'm concerned about the toll this transition will take (and is already taking) on humans. 

As another caster once put it: "Who's solving the need to make a living for actual living breathing humans?"
