Brutus, the dog who participated in the Paraguayan War. During the Paraguayan War, which took place from December 1864 to March 1870, Brazilian troops, in the 31st Corps of Volunteers of the Fatherland, had the dog Brutus as their mascot. Brutus was a stray dog from the center of Rio de Janeiro who once entered the barracks and ended up staying there, being raised by the soldiers. When the presentation took place in that barracks of the soldiers and officers who would be part of the 31st Volunteer Corps of the Fatherland. Brutus presented himself in the courtyard and marched with the soldiers to Praça Mauá, where he boarded the ship to Paraguay. Historical accounts show that Brutus helped in rescue missions for injured soldiers and was even injured in combat, but survived and returned to the country victorious as a hero. However, years later, walking through Campo de Santana, Brutus died of poisoning. Nowadays, the animal is stuffed in the Rio de Janeiro military police museum. 0 reply
