Queenstown: New Zealand. Surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range – a beloved ski area – this lakefront resort town attracts active adventurers from around the world. Queenstown is the birthplace of bungee jumping, which was first tested at Kawarau Bridge in 1988, but travelers can also get the adrenaline pumping with zip lining, jet boating, skydiving and more. For those in search of less extreme activities, Queenstown offers guided tours to historic Arrowtown and nearby vineyards, plus hiking trails, ski slopes and sightseeing cruises.

Funafuti Atoll: Tuvalu Tuvalu's capital, Funafuti – a skinny atoll composed of roughly 30 islets around a lagoon – is perhaps best appreciated by drone. However, the views are just as impressive from the ground; you'll be surrounded by sea, coral and sand as you traverse the atoll on foot (or even by motorbike, a popular way to get around this remote Polynesian destination). The main islet is Fongafale, where the village of Vaiaku is located.

Luberon Regional Nature Park: Provence, France. Though Provence features a variety of stunning landscapes, few are as breathtaking as the Luberon Regional Natural Park in France. If you visit between the end of June and early August, you'll get to see (and smell) acres of blooming lavender plants. The herb's oil, which is known for its medicinal qualities, is pressed in local distilleries and workshops that welcome travelers, but for more insight about the plant, head to the Lavender Museum in the village of Cabrières-d'Avignon.
