1/ To play devils advocate on recent events, and try to make a good faith defense of the Trump administrations actions: Since 2001, the US has been occupied by a non stop series of events that, at the time, seemed extremely urgent, but in retrospect, probably didn’t really matter. 2001 Counter terrorism in Afghanistan 2003 Preemptively invading Iraq Counter insurgency for the next 10 years 2011 Arab spring = supporting fledgling democracies in the Middle East 2014 Russia annexes Crimea 2015 Syrian civil war Iran nuclear deal, Palestine questions, etc, etc. All the while, China has become a growing threat to the American way of life. https://youtu.be/vskdv9eH8kQ?si=vDo7g2k_Peamar4M&t=287

2/ The combined GDP of EU members is 10x that of Russia. So either they are apathetic allies and not stepping up, or they are incapable allies, who won’t be helpful in a future conflict anyways. U.S. presidents for ~70 years have been trying to get Europeans to increase defense spending to no avail. For at least 10 years, they’ve known about the threat of Russia, but have made no meaningful increases in defense spending. The past two weeks they've scared the bejesus out of everyone, looks like finally defense spending is increasing, albeit, still very modestly.

3/ It seems trump's people thinks that the whole Ukrainian conflict will turn out to be ultimately inconsequential, whatever the outcome. (Of course, if nukes start getting lobbed in Europe, we’re all screwed. But thats unfortunately a truism of the modern world and can be used to justify almost anything. What if Saddam, Iran, Al Qaeda, Russia use nukes). A more realistic scenario would be the CCP — who have always maintained that Taiwan is part of China — sets up a blockade and sets a 10% export tariff on semiconductors. Is that enough to start a war over? Probably not. So what then?
