Honestly this is a self preservation tool. 

If you did, and took everything you heard at face value, you'd likely quit or become depressed.

I mean that if you take everything seriously ALL THE TIME, that you would also let the huge amount of negativity that can be experienced as a founder at face value.

Knowing that it comes with the territory and to relax a little is a big step.
