Gilgan, a former accountant, founded Mattamy Homes, an Ontario-based home builder and real estate company, in 1978. Today, the company is the largest private homebuilder in North America, having constructed more than 100,000 homes in Canada and the U.S. Along the way, Gilgan—who has an estimated net worth of US$4 billion, according to Forbes—has emerged as one of Canada’s most generous philanthropists.
