The year was 2003. We were up north where you do your main field training to become a Marine at the MCRD (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) in San Diego, CA. It was the middle of the night, absolutely pitch black except for the stars shining down on us miserable souls that had the privilege of doing the praying mantis 🙏 This torture device uses ones own body to inflict maximum muscle fatigue by squatting halfway and then placing your hands in front of your chest in the praying position half bent. I know not how long we were struggling to stay in that position when we got the command to "Eat Dirt!" So used to hearing "Hit the Deck" or other phrases. Confused ... We literally began to eat the dirt and the little amount of grass a top of it. Our Drill Instructor bewildered was aghast at the site! "You fing retards I meant get on the dirt!" As he couldn't help but burst out laughing behind his Smokey the Bear cover... This post reminded me of this memory and I had to share 😅 Blessing on this Sunday!
