slow burn sociological analysis that rewards patience once you get past the academic first half. explores how status-seeking shapes everything from music careers to fashion trends with just the right mix of theory and examples. particularly enjoyed the section about gourmet cupcakes as status theory: something meaningless becomes a status marker, gets oversaturated, then becomes equally meaningless to care about at all. perfect encapsulation of how cultural cycles work. good for understanding why some things become cool while others don't. also SURPRISINGLY neutral on NFTs (rare for academic types), with a fascinating breakdown of how Beeple made it in the art world by explicitly rejecting it.
