So, if the first reason to participate in public races is medal, than the second one is atmosphere on the start. OMG! It's incredible, thousands of people, are ready  are standing at the start line ready to make PRs. The energy around is strong, it seems that you can touch the air around you. Glad to be part of this community, united by a common hobby, glad to feel their support and support other runners on the road. This is my personal type of drugs, my dopamine, endorphin and serotonin
