Have you written a book that was picked up by a major publishing house? What advice would you give to a first time non-fiction writer?

I have a close friend who's written two and two acquaintances (we worked together for years) that have written I think five between them. All have made best-seller lists at some point. All three of them built a name as a trusted writers/journalists in their niches first

no, they had support and a budget from the publisher. all of them had the publishing house approach them first. the book tour promo side was a grind for all of them. the allotted budget made it feasible but not comfy. if I remember correctly the grind was worth it for all of them because of their cut on each sale
