Navigating Risk vs. Reward

How do you decide when a risk is worth taking? Have you ever taken a big risk that paid off—or one that didn’t go as planned?

I have done both. At 19, I took over ownership of a small franchise pizza restaurant. It was a good opportunity but it didn’t go as planned. The restaurant didn’t make money and I struggled to make ends meet. Ultimately, I sold it for a very small profit, but nothing for the time and effort put in. 

Then, in 2013, I quit my safe job to start a risky digital marketing company. We grew quickly and in 2014, a large competitor made a generous offer to buy out the company. I took that offer and I began working for them.

Today, I am much more careful about taking risks. I’m almost 40 and my time is more valuable to me now. I will still take risks but the rewards must be outsized for me to really do so.
