if you don't know the Sidewalk Labs story, you won't know why so many people don't think network states will be a thing. Worth a read (though excuse the title if you're a tech bro offended by the term "tech bros") https://hardresetmedia.substack.com/p/tech-bros-still-cant-build-cities

have you followed the California Forever project? the problem, at so many levels, seems to be state bureaucracy in the US that restricts building. See Ezra Klien's latest book for a good tour of this.

I actually hadn’t followed that one. Im generally aligned with the Ezra / YIMBY movement. my wife worked in various NYC gov departments on private development and public housing so I’ve seen firsthand how local community boards exert undo influence in what gets built.

California Forever is a really intriguing one (that I hope finds a path). Good interview with the founder a while back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNp3DQK_yRM https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/22/business/economy/california-forever-solano-county-city-on-hold.html

I’ll need to check this out. From the times article it seems like more transparency into the plans could have helped their case with the county. I guess I’m generally not optimistic that people dreaming of utopian cities are also thinking about “non productive” members that all cities must burden
